Everything you need to know about soybean oil
Soybean oil is one of the most widely used vegetable oils in the world. With its neutral flavour and high heat resistance, it’s ideal for everyday cooking. But how healthy is it really? And what exactly is it used for? We’ll break it down for you.
What is soybean oil?
Soybean oil is extracted from the seeds of the soybean plant. After the beans are crushed, the oil is removed - either through mechanical pressing or by using a solvent. The oil is then refined, filtered and deodorised. The result? A clear, pale-yellow oil with a neutral flavour and a high smoke point. Just what you want from a durable, all-round cooking oil.
Is soybean oil healthy?
Like many plant-based oils, soybean oil has quite a few benefits:
Rich in unsaturated fats, including omega-3 and omega-6.
Contains vitamin E, a natural antioxidant.
Free from cholesterol and naturally gluten-free – making it suitable for gluten-intolerant diets.
That said, balance matters. Too much omega-6 and too little omega-3 may contribute to inflammation over time. It’s a good idea to alternate with other oils like olive or flaxseed oil.
What is soybean oil used for?
Soybean oil is a true all-rounder, especially in the kitchen:
Frying, sautéing, roasting – perfect for high temperatures thanks to its high smoke point.
Marinades, dressings or mayo – its neutral taste blends in easily.
Industrial food production – commonly used in sauces, snacks, margarine and more.
But its uses go far beyond food. You’ll also find it in natural cosmetics, soaps, and even eco-friendly paints and biodiesel. A real multi-purpose product.
What about sustainability?
Soy production can be a sensitive issue. Large areas of rainforest have been cleared to grow soybeans. That’s why it’s worth choosing oils from responsible sources or opting for certified organic if sustainability matters to you.
Do you have a soy allergy? While refined soybean oil usually contains very few allergens, those with a severe soy allergy should consult a medical professional before use.
