What you really need to know about your wooden Wood Works board

When using your Skottsberg Wood Works board there are four key moments: before use, during use, after use and when re-oiling. We’ve gathered the best tips to help extend your board’s lifespan and preserve the natural beauty of the wood. That way your board stays practical and remains a showpiece in your kitchen for years to come.

Before use

  • Wipe it down
Remove the packaging and wipe the board with a dry or slightly damp cloth before first use. This makes it fresh and ready to go.
  • Ready to use
Your Wood Works board has already been treated and is ready to use straight away. Our serving boards are treated with two coats of Tung oil. The chopping boards are treated with a combination of beeswax and mineral oil. There’s no need to oil them before first use.

During use

  • Use both sides
Turn your board regularly and use both sides when chopping or serving. This helps distribute wear evenly and prevents one side from being used more heavily. It also keeps the wood looking good and the board flat for longer.
  • Avoid extreme conditions
Wood is sensitive to high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Don’t use your board as a trivet for hot pans or oven dishes, as the heat can dry out or damage the wood and may cause the board to warp.

After use / cleaning

  • Hand wash only
Rinse the board under warm water after use and remove any food residue with a brush or sponge. Dish soap is usually not necessary to clean the board properly after use.
  • Not dishwasher safe
Never put your board in the dishwasher. The combination of high temperatures and moisture can cause the wood to dry out, crack or warp. Always wash your board by hand.
  • Dry immediately
Pat the board dry with a soft cloth and place it upright. This allows both sides to dry evenly and prevents warping. Never leave it flat as one side will dry faster and cause the board to bend.

Re-oiling

  • When to oil
Over time, wood naturally dries out. If your board starts to look dry or dull, or absorbs moisture more quickly, it’s time to treat it again. The type of oil you use depends on which Wood Works board you have.
  • Cutting boards
Treat your chopping board with food grade mineral oil. This oil is stable, odourless and retains its quality over time. Avoid using olive oil or sunflower oil, as these oils can oxidise over time, which you may eventually notice in their smell and feel.
  • Serving boards
Apply a thin coat of Tung oil using a lint free cloth. Allow the oil to soak in, remove any excess and leave the board to dry thoroughly. For the complete process, see our guide to oiling your board.
