Our wooden cutting board is more hygienic than a plastic cutting board
Cut your ingredients in style. Because wood naturally contains the substance tannin, bacteria do not stand a chance. The wood type has another major advantage: it is exactly hard enough for comfortable cutting without making your knife dull. And it is extremely strong: your board will last a lifetime. If you really want to damage it, just put it in the dishwasher often. No, better not do that.
Each board is treated with a combination of beeswax and mineral oil. This finish seals the pores of the wood, giving moisture, dirt and bacteria less chance to penetrate while keeping the surface water repellent. However, wood remains a natural product. Under the influence of temperature, humidity, water and use, it can always shrink, expand or move slightly. Our end grain cutting boards are produced with great care. The wood is carefully selected and dried to the correct moisture level, minimising the risk of warping or cracking. With normal use and proper maintenance, the board will remain in excellent condition for many years.
One side for dry ingredients and one side for wet ingredients
One side of the board is smooth, ideal for cutting dry ingredients. Planning to make a mess? Then use the other side. We routed a groove with a reservoir into that side, so all excess moisture is neatly collected. The sides of this cutting board are equipped with routed handles.
The cutting board with self healing properties
We made it in a special way: end grain wood pieces are glued together. This gives the board self healing properties: you really have to go overboard if you want scratches to remain visible. If the board does warp slightly, turn it over and leave it like that. Often the board will straighten itself out again by the next day.
And one more tip for extra stability while cutting: sometimes some moisture or water remains between the wooden cutting board and the countertop. This can make the underside slippery and cause the board to slide around. In that case, place a kitchen towel between the board and the countertop. You usually have one nearby anyway and it makes cutting much more comfortable and safe.
Maintaining your cutting board
We have already given your board its first treatment, so it is ready for immediate use. Your task is to keep it in good condition afterwards. As soon as the wood looks dry or dull, it is time for a layer of food grade mineral oil: stable, odourless and without the risk of losing quality. Olive oil or sunflower oil may seem logical in the kitchen, but they oxidise over time and you will notice that by smell and touch. Read here how to best maintain your cutting board.
